House 1 on via Becherine, Fiesole offers space for four Erasmus students each semester. The unprecedented demand for utilisation requires a rethinking of the spatial volume, which for us justifies a gutting. Six freely inserted modules (150x220x280 cm), separated from the building envelope, characterise the volume and create unconventional retreat areas.
Reduced static elements create wide lines of sight and grazing light. A further module organises the outdoor space. The spacious communal area on the ground floor invites people to meet and get together - an open house for friends, neighbours and overnight guests. Different levels zone the existing spatial volume. The staircase leads increasingly into the private sphere and creates visual connections between the levels and meeting places, which seem to float in the light, airy space. Each of the cubes has a special feature in terms of its formal character and the inclusion of its potential outdoor space.
